A Buddhist artist, a meteor shower, and a flame that never went out
This is a Maitreya Buddha my nana made before she died. It was the most popular piece she ever created — and the inspiration for everything I'm building.
Near the end of her life as a Buddhist artist in Tucson, she witnessed a spectacular meteor shower. She believed it was Maitreya entering the world to realign humankind with its true nature. The Maitreya is prophesied to appear when the teachings of Gautama Buddha have declined — to re-establish the Dharma once it's been forgotten. Honestly, I think we passed that point a while ago.
Her certainty was so unshakable that it became mine. I'd grown up Christian, but I went looking — Zen, psychology, mysticism, philosophy. I settled on Zen, and I sat. In time I felt it: a spark, not the whole fire. Enough to understand what she meant about the kalpa flame.
Modern life is built to pull you away from intentional living. On a spring break trip to Sedona, Arizona with my family, Kalpa was born.
